Charles Freyberg
Charles Freyberg is a Kings Cross poet and performer whose career began in the 1990s as an actor and director, mentored by surreal clown Victor Sheehan. His early work emerged from the Sydney performance art scene, featuring drag shows at Club Bent and various original plays. He later refined his craft through postgraduate studies in poetry at the University of Sydney under Judith Beveridge.
Freyberg is the author of three books: Dining at the Edge, The Crumbling Mansion, and his latest, Sacred Remnants. His poetry has been featured in Meanjin, Plumwood Mountain, and the Sappho Queer anthology, and his work has been translated into both Romanian and Spanish for international journals in Mexico, Colombia, and Costa Rica.
A prolific performer, Freyberg’s work has spanned:
• The Experiment: A dance opera about Chelsea Manning at the Sydney Conservatorium.
• The Fierce Violets: A poetry and music collective nominated for a Sydney Fringe Award.
• The Crumbling Mansion Show: A solo performance in which he channeled every character across all genders.
In 2020, Freyberg received an award at the National Art School during Mardi Gras for his services to LGBTIQ+ poetry. Whether performing at the Nimbin Poetry World Cup or local festivals like Surry Hills, his work remains a fixture of the Sydney arts community.
